Though not as harrowing as Geoffrey Wright's preceding movie, Romper Stomper, Metal Skin's depiction of life in the car-loving subculture of suburban Melbourne is equally as bleak. Much more than just a portrait of revheads at work, however, Metal Skin is the story of Joe (Young), a pathetic character who lives with his senile, psychotic father in a hovel, works a dead-end job in a supermarket, gets flogged in drag races and loves a practising witch (Morice) who's in turn infatuated with another co-worker, Dazey (Mendelsohn). It all builds into a gun-toting, car- chasing, murderous, suicidal, satanic – and surreal – climax that doesn't so much work to an end point, but instead leaves you reeling at the hopelessness of the lives you've just witnessed.
