This classic film follows the rise and fall of Jake La Motta (Robert DeNiro) over a period of 25 years. La Motta is a strange man, self-assured, violent, jealous and tragically ignorant towards those around him. Whilst these character traits translate well to the boxing ring they don't serve him as well in his life.
When we first meet La Motta the two closest people to him are his wife and his brother and boxing manager Joey (Joe Pesci). However, over the course of the film La Motta's personality drives a wedge between them. La Motta soon separates from his first wife and takes up with the very young Vickie. This relationship, was not the best move for La Motta and Vickie only serves to worsen La Motta's already messed up personality.
Although blood may be thicker than water, as far as La Motta is concerned they might as well be the same thing. Joey, has faith and belief in his brother but La Motta cannot see this and during the film drifts further away from him.
You may think that boxers, when they finish their career, either check into a hospital to get their head checked or end up managing others. Not La Motta, who, minus wife number two Vickie, becomes an entertainer. We watch on as his life continues to spiral out of control.
