Captain Amazing (Greg Kinnear) has a problem. He is so good at his job, that all the bad guys are in jail, there is virtually no crime in Champion City and he just lost his Pepsi endorsement. To save his job, he arranges for his arch-nemesis Casanova Frankenstein (Geoffery Rush) to be released from the insane asylum he had him committed to 20 years earlier. This backfires and Casanova takes Captain Amazing hostage, planning to rule Champion City with his new super weapon. The only ones that can possible save him and the city are the Mystery Men, super heroes that just aren't all that super, but are determined non-the-less to use their mediocre powers, such as anger, flatulence, fork throwing, shoveling, bowling, philosophising and maybe invisiblity to save the day, the city and their self respect.
The cast is amazing: William H. Macy, arguably one of the finest modern screen performers, the very funny Ben Stiller, stand-up comic Eddie Izzard, indie goddess Janeane Garofalo, and even oddball musical genius Tom Waits.
The Shovellor (William H Macy), Mr Furious (Ben Stiller) and The blue Raja(Hank Azaria) initally makes up this team and are out and about trying to help the defenceless with their sheer incompetance, but are constantly being overshadowed by the true superhero of Champion city, Captain Amazing (Greg Kinnear, having a great time here).
So Joins The Bowler (Janeane Garofalo, who has her dead dad's skull inside a bowling ball!)), The Spleen (Paul Ruebens with a severe gas problem), Invisble Boy (Kel Mitchell, only invisible when no one looks at him!) and the groups mentor The Sphinx (Wes Studi) on a great fun romp.
