This threatened to be one of ther toughest contests and tightest games in Grand Final history. Both sides were stacked with talent and they had both enjoyed very gopod seasons. Grand Final day dawned under cloudy skies and the rain which threatened came just prior to the game and fell persistently through the first 15 to 20 minutes. That period saw what was arguably the most entralling openiong to a Grand Final in the game's history. Carlton had 2 goals on the board before most patrons had taken their seats. Moments after the second an almighty brawl broke out on the Southern Stand wing. One player refused to take part - veteran Tiger Kevin Bartlett. As most players were tucking their jumpers back in and straightening themselves out Carlton kicked another. This game had everything but a Richmond revival, until then. Just as Carlton had kicked its third unanswered major, the Tigers hit back. The brilliance of Maurice Rioli sparked Richmond into activity and after 20 minutes we had ourselves a Grand Final of great quality and high drama. The match ebbed and flowed for the rest of the afternoon, with Carlton working its way on top just before three quarter time. It had to endure brialliant performances from Rioli, Geoff Raines and Dale Weightman, a resolute Tiger defence, van injury to gun full-forward Ross Ditchburn and a streaker. Just as Richmond lifted in an attempt to bridge Carlton's lead, the Blues found another gear and when Alex Marcou slotted through his third goal at the 22 minute mark of the final term it appeared as though the final curtian had been drawn on Carlton's third flag in four years. It was back-to-back flags for David Parkin and his men and they stood, at the end of '82, as one of the finest outfits of all time.
