Mother & Son is nothing short of an institution in this country and with good reason as it is one of the best aussie comedies ever made. The premise of the show is incredibly simple: it revolves around a slightly eccentric, definitely paranoid and some might say senile elderly lady named Maggie (Cracknell) who is cared for by her 40-something son Arthur (McDonald) who has returned home after being recently divorced. Maggie makes Arthur's life hell by hiding things, constantly chastising him, using her acid tongue to cruel effect and threatening harm to both herself and the house if she doesn't get her way, and all of this happens on a good day. Tacking onto Arthur's misery is the fact that his brother Robert (Szeps) who occasionally pops in for a 'cuppa' encourages the delusions of his mother in order to maintain his status as 'the favourite'. Whilst Robert is parading around sympathising with the problems his mother is facing he is either planning to sell her house or put Maggie in a home all of which remains oblivious to Maggie who's attentions are all focused on Arthur's faults. At the end of the day I haven't decided whether Arthur has the patience of a saint or is simply a wimp who is easily pushed around. As much as I would like to lean towards to former the latter is the more likely option. To explain any more about the episodes or events that take place would ruin the enjoyment for those yet to see this marvellous show. Suffice to say, if you're a fan of Fawlty Towers then you are going to love Mother & Son.
