Having won the preliminary final against North Melbourne by 86 points Essendon went into the Grand Final with some chance of defeating one of the most powerful Hawthron sides ever assembled. The Bombers put on a show against the Roos which would have put a flutter through any other camp in the football world. You suspected however, that the Hawks hardly batted an eyelid. Even when Gary Buckenara snppaed his medial ligaments minutes into the Grand Final, the Hawks refused to panic. Ken Judge came on and have them a presence acorss half forward and when Tim Watson was felled behind play it was cleaer to all that nothing was going to stand in Hawtorn's way. They were tough and mean and very few Bombers were prepared to support their fallen team mate. In many ways that was a synmbolic moment. Watson's man, Colin Robertson, became a telling influence on the match as the Hawks began to career away. By half time they led by nearly 10 goals and this match was developing in a rout. At no stage did the Bombers threaten to come back, instead Hawthorn simply showcased its awesome skills and recorded an 83 point hiding over the Bombers. Just as the match was significant for its illustration of Hawthorn's vast powers, it would also stand as the day the young Essendon side learnt possibly its most valuable lessons. And what better master to study but the mighty Hawks.
