One notch above a used-car salesman, Schindler is an entrepreneur with a string of failed businesses to his name who goes to Krakow in Poland to see if he can cash-in on the recent Nazi occupation.
After ingratiating himself to the Nazi hierarchy, Schindler is commissioned to produce field equipment for the German army - now all he needs are investors and employees. For these he goes directly to the local Jewish community, now totally segregated into a ghetto, and makes them an offer of unlimited black-market goods in exchange for a cash injection and a willing workforce. It is during these negotiations that Schindler meets Itzhak Stern (Kingsley), a meek bookkeeper who becomes Oskar's personal accountant.
All goes well for a while: Schindler is making money by the suitcase load (literally), his ties with the Nazis get stronger with every passing day, and his roster of mistresses continues to grow. But the bubble looks like it may burst when the ghetto is purged and its inhabitants are relocated to concentration camps. Schindler is outraged when 'his Jews' are taken from him - who will make the gear so important to the German war effort? Polish workers are too expensive and will narrow his profit-margin, so Oskar must reclaim what he considers to be his property.
The Krakow Jews have been put in the care of Kommandant Amon Goeth (Fiennes), a bored, sadistic man whose pastimes include target-practice with the prisoners and raping his maid, Helen (Davidtz). Schindler befriends Goeth and manages to secure his employees again on a day-release scheme. It is only after witnessing the inhumanity and cruelty of the concentration camp that Schindler begins to question the Nazis' treatment of the Jews, and even starts to aid them in small ways.
With the announcement of Hitler's Final Solution (the liquidation of the Nazis' enemies, such as Jews, Gypsies and homosexuals), it becomes a race against time for Schindler to save the lives of as many of the Krakow Jews as possible. He puts forward a proposal that a select group of 'essential workers' should be set aside to produce artillery shells for the German army, and that those chosen will be under his direct command, with only a small entourage of soldiers to guard them. This proposal is agreed to and Schindler and Stern set about producing a list of people who will ultimately survive the Holocaust.

EXTRA FEATURES
Trailer
Featurette-Voices From The List
Featurette-The Shoah Foundation Story With Steven Spielberg
Biographies-Cast & Crew
Notes-About Oskar Schindler
