There will probably be three films that come to mind when it comes to spoof and skit-type films: The Groove Tube in 1974, Kentucky Fried Movie in 1977 and the 1987 classic Amazon Women on the Moon. Whilst many probably won't remember the first, Kentucky Fried Movie and Amazon Women on the Moon have been long time favourites of fans of film comedy with a twist. Director John Landis, known for films such as Animal House, The Blues Brothers, Trading Places and Spies Like Us, and having cut his teeth on film spoof comedy with Kentucky Fried Movie, returns to the director's chair for several segments in this film. Also contributing to the directorial duties are Joe Dante (director, The Howling), Carl Gottlieb (writer, The Jerk), Peter Horton (director, TV's thirtysomething) and Robert K. Weiss (producer, Police Squad!). Even though the contributors come from quite a variety of backgrounds, what they put together here with Amazon Women on the Moon worked, and better still, it still continues to work.
As the directors of this film are a veritable Who's Who of filmmaking, so it is with this film's stars. Just about anyone who's anyone is in this film. Most only on screen for a short time, this film features everyone from Michelle Pfeiffer to Joe Pantoliano to Rosanna Arquette to B.B. King. Almost 20 years since its release, this film still works well.
