Michael Caine Stars As Charlie Croker Who Has Just Been Released From Prison. After Making Up For Lost Time, Most Notably With His Tailor And The Ladies, He Returns To Work To Discover That His Mentor Has Been Killed In A Car Accident In Italy While Scoping Out Their Next Big Hit. A Quick ‘Visit' With The Man'S Widow Lets Charlie Obtain The Plans For The Heist And He Sets Out To Make It Work. The Plan Was To Create A Massive Traffic Jam In Turin, Italy And Steal $4 Million Worth Of Gold And Then Get Out In Mini Coopers.
Such An Intricate Scheme Needs Help From Other Sources. Croker Calls On Mr Bridger (Noel Coward) A Sophistic Mastermind Criminal Who Can Obtain The Resources To Do The Job, All From The Inside Of His Jail Cell. He Also Needs Professor Peach (Benny Hill) The Brilliant But Perverted Computer Genius To Disable Turin'S Extremely High Tech Traffic Control Centre. The Local Police Don'T Seem To Be A Problem For The Guys, But When The Mafia Work Out What They Plan To Do Things Start To Get A Little More Difficult.
The Set Up For The Heist Involves The Crew Preparing For Their Individual Roles As Drivers Or Tech Guys. It Uses A Lot Of Humour And After The Heist Takes Place, The Last Forty Minutes Become A Wild Ride Of Action And Car Chases. Since The Movie Was Filmed In The Late 1960S You Would Be Forgiven For Thinking That The Car Chases Would Now Seem Very Dated, But That Is Not True. The Cars Perform Amazing Stunts And Go Into Places You Wouldn'T Expect Them To, All Without The Use Of Cgi Like Modern Films.
The Humour Is Very English, And Michael Caine Is Fantastic As The Smooth Cockney Croker. Benny Hill Is Hilarious As Professor Peach And His Fascination With Larger Women, And Noel Coward Also Makes Mr Bridger His Own Character. The Cliffhanger Ending Is A Brilliant Finish To The Movie, That Has Unfortunately Been Copied A Few Too Many Times.
This Is A Movie That Was Fun To Watch From Start To End, With Extraordinary Characters And Good Hard Laughs. The Truly Amazing Car Chases Are Exhilarating Even For Modern Audiences And Overall Is Much More Fun Than The Recent Remake
