There was high drama at the MCG when Hawthorn and St Kilda met to fight out the Grand Final of 1971. Peter Hudson, Hawthorn's record breaking full forward, went into the game needing 4 goals to break Bob Pratt's long standing record season haul of 150 goals. It was sub-plot which had the whole football world talking. But St Kilda had only one thing on it's mind - the flag. The Hawks, it has to be said, were just as single minded and it was the brown and golds who looked to be finding the heat a little hard to handle. Just before three-quarter time St Kilda had slipped out to a four goal lead and having had conditions made difficult by rain, it looked to be a winning break for the Saints. But thats when John Kennedy, Hawthorn's coach, began to swing the changes. Hudson moved out to centre half-forward and Bob Keddie moved to full-forward. Thats when the game hotted up. Hudson was crashed and got to his feet with his ear badly lacerated. He played on and became a factor, but it was Keddie who gave the Hawks a real presence in attack. It became apparent that St Kilda was struggling against a Kennedy inspired tidal wave...the big question was would Hudson break the record? When happened devastated the great Hawk, but what better way to compensate than with a premierhsip. It was one to remember.
